Guest Post from: Alex Bell, author of Jasmyn
What makes a fairytale?
Is it the princesses? Or the wicked witches? Is it the castles, or the magic spells, or the enchanted swords? Is it Prince Charming? Is it Happily Ever After?
Disney has, perhaps, sweetened fairytales a bit – especially where love is concerned. The princess meets the prince once and, suddenly, they’re in love. Even Disney fairytales, though, have evil in them. But the original fairytales were much darker and more sinister – aimed at adults as much as at children. Those original stories had heartache and loss and bittersweet, complicated love. It took more than just one kiss to make everything perfect at the end.
The problem with fairytales is that you never get to see what happens after Happily Ever After.
What if you meet the love of your life, marry him and live in a state of blissful happiness – but only for a matter of months before he dies, suddenly and unexpectedly? What if you then find out that he wasn’t the man you believed him to be at all? That he was mixed up in a real-life, modern-day fairytale of his own – a tale of swan princesses, German castles, human bones, magical faeries, mythical knights, terrible evil and everlasting love. A story that is painful and wonderful, sad and beautiful all at the same time?
What if what happens after Happily Ever After is even more of a fairytale than what came before it?

I would like to see how life for Belle and the Beast went after they got married. What would their kids be like? Would another curse somehow come upon them? Would the Beast teach his children to be more caring and loving?
=) I see Kristen would like to know about them too~ lol
PrincessShayla@gmail.com
Sleeping Beauty: in the most popular version of the tale, the prince kisses the Beauty, and then she awakes from her sleep (often told as hundreds of years later), they get married, the end.
What really happens, though, when the Beauty is centuries older than her new subjects? Everything has moved on: culture, women's roles, language, HISTORY... it would be bewildering and foreign and possibly very strange. I'd like to imagine that after a rocky period of adjustment, the Beauty takes some time for herself, learns the basics of the current technology, and becomes a steampunk mechanic. Then she can have her own crazy alternate-world adventures, and not have to sleep through the exciting stuff.

I want to see what happens to Cinderella's stepsisters after she marries the prince. I don't imagine that she would exact any revenge upon them even though she would have the power to do so now and plenty of reason. I think they would turn on each other and end up with neither marrying as they keep ruining each other's relationships out of jealousy. Cinderella and the Prince would have lovely children.

Enchanted: (kind of a fairytale - hope it counts...)
So Giselle just gets her happily ever after staying in the real world - I think not. She totally ditched all her friends, including Pip (who is just adorable) so therefore she should ditch the real world and the new happy family needs to leave and go back to her world where some other trouble starts and we get more of the story :)

I think it would be amusing to see what happened to Rapunzel and her prince after they married and lived happily ever after. Having been trapped in a tower for so many years I can see her going the opposite direction with her own kids and letting them walk all over her. And she might have a major case of wanderlust, or issues about people touching her hair.
Great contest!

I would like it, if after Snow White and her Prince ride into the sunset, she asks him just why he kissed her. . . . At which point he reveals that he comes from a magic kingdom where spells aren't restricted to witches. And Snow is going to get to learn magic too. . . . I really am just making this up.
No need to enter me. I'm dropping in to say thanks for the e-mail. I've got this posted at Win a Book for you.

I would really like to know what kind of relationship did the lumberjack, little red riding hood and her grandmother kept from that point on...
I learned about this in West of Mars blog.
For Beauty and the Beast it ends with a love,a kiss and the spell being broken. But what if the Prince's love of Belle is based on looks? Maybe there is an extra clause in that magic contract which backfires to hit Belle with a spell turning her into a beast or creature. Now it's up to the prince to learn to love her unconditionally and he only has a limited time to do it.

I'd want to know about the villains, I have this romantic notion that they aren't really villains, they just do some bad things. Like the bad fairy in Sleeping Beauty, she's tall, green, and gets shafted to the biggest event while her sisters get to go. I'm sure it has happened numerous times and she formed some sort of complex about it. So I guess I'd like to know what happens with that.

Gosh, I'm not sure. I think I'd like that at the end of The Wizard of Oz, The Wicked Witch of the East turned out not to be dead. Why? Well, go read see the musical Wicked based on Gregory Maguire's book Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West. I prefer the musical myself, and it's more family friendly.

After I became old enough to develop feminist notions, I always thought the story of the Little Mermaid was a little contrite. How would being surrounded by a whole new set of circumstances change who you were? Honestly, I don't think I could ever leave my family.

I want to know the after HEA in The Twelve Dancing Princesses. So the oldest got married (which is a cool switch in and of itself) but what about the other eleven? What do eleven sisters do when they don't inherit the kingdom? What does a princess without a kingdom do? Now that would be a fascinating story.

I want the wolf to somehow come back to life or be redeemed after the Little Red Riding Hood tale. It always ended too 'pat' for me...like Red got away with something, and the wolf's cleverness wasn't rewarded. So the wolf should get a second chance, or get transformed into something less sinister, and the story should continue on...

In the original little mermaid we get a happily ever after but not with the characters we like. The mermaid dies because of her love of the prince and he marries another. I would love to see the revenge of her sisters and father to the prince that didn't want the woman that was ready to die for him. I think it could be an all new book! And at least it's something new...
I think it would be nice if Snow White ran a dating service and introduced the 7 dwarfs to 7 dwarf women. They could all get married and have dwarf babies and then move into the castle together.

I would like to know if Hansel and Gretel forgave their father when they returned, after cooking the witch. After all, he did abandon them in the middle of the forest, twice.
What I want to know is how Sleeping Beauty and the Prince get along after they're married. Sure, they say they live happily ever after with their 'true love,' but they'd only matter for a matter of minutes! That prince could be a nose-picker with a more-than-healthy ego for all she knew. So, essentially, I want to know what the relationship would be like after the lovey-dovey feeling wears off. hmmm

Hi, great contest!! My email is kiara.dg(at)gmail.com
I'd like to see how Cinderella's habits have to change... from having to work all his life, and then acting like a princess in front of everyone, smiling all the time, acting well, pretending and everything. Sounds boring. It would be boring for me.
