Beautiful Dead: Jonas by Eden Maguire (Partial Review)

Beautiful Dead: Book 1 Jonas by Eden Maguire

Review by: Lauren

Book From: Sourcebooks Fire

Summary (from Amazon):

Something strange is happening in Ellerton High. Phoenix is the fourth teenager to die within a year. His street fight stabbing follows the deaths of Jonas, Summer and Arizona in equally strange and sudden circumstances. Rumours of ghosts and strange happenings rip through the small community as it comes to terms with shock and loss. Darina, Phoenix's grief-stricken girlfriend, is on the verge. She can't escape her intense heartache, or the impossible apparitions of those that are meant to be dead. And all the while the sound of beating wings echo inside her head...

And then one day Phoenix appears to Darina. Ecstatic to be reunited, he tells her about the Beautiful Dead. Souls in limbo, they have been chosen to return to the world to set right a wrong linked to their deaths and bring about justice. Beautiful, superhuman and powerful, they are marked by a 'death mark' -- a small tattoo of angel's wings. Phoenix tells her that the sound of invisible wings beating are the millions of souls in limbo, desperate to return to earth. Darina's mission is clear: she must help Jonas, Summer, Arizona, and impossibly, her beloved Phoenix, right the wrong linked to their deaths to set them free from limbo so that they can finally rest in peace. Will love conquer death? And if it does, can Darina set it free?

Partial Review:

I hate to say this, but I haven't finished the book...hence the partial review. Thought I was going to say I hated the book? Nope, not quite. I'm actually enjoying it for the most part. I know it's the first of a series so it took a bit to really get things set up but I'm excited to see how things go from this point on. It's really getting into the heart of what Darina needs to do and seeing that Jonas is first, I can't wait for more. I want to know why Phoenix, her boyfriend isn't first, or if it's an order thing. Not sure yet, so we'll see.

Anyway, I apologize I can't say much. I really meant to get this finished in time but life gets crazy and I had other things on a tighter deadline. Overall, I'm enjoying the book. I really like the premise and I can't say much on how that's going yet as I need to finish the first book. I think it would be worth a read at the moment though. I'm not enjoying it as much as I hoped I would based on the summary but again, I need to get through it all and see if it moves in a different direction or gets more exciting so we'll see. Be sure to give it a look and read other reviews!

It looks good - you'll have to let us know if you liked it once your finished.
Sometimes the first book in a series is like the "pilot" episode of a TV series. They have to do the set up but it gets better once things get going :-)

I thought this looked so interesting and then couldn't get into it at all. I have passed it to my youth reviewers to see if they get more from it.
