Interview: Pretty Little Liars' Laura Leighton

Interview: Laura Leighton

By: Lauren

Laura Leighton will be in Pretty Little Liars on ABC Family starting tonight at 8/7c. The show is based off the immensely popular series of the same name by Sara Shepard, so don't miss it!

1. What is it like being on another show? What are your hopes for Pretty Little Liars' future?

I'm very happy to be a part of the cast of Pretty Little Liars--I am enjoying playing a mom with a secret or two, and it's fun to once again be a part of a show that already has an audience anxiously awaiting it's premiere. I certainly hope the show finds a loyal and enthusiastic following. I would love to be a part of another long running series--especially since the cast and crew are fantastic!

2. For those that might not know much about the book and its series yet, what can you tell them about the show and your role in it?

I like to call it "Teen Noir". It's a show about a well to do community of teenagers and families, dealing with the recent discovery that the class Queen Bee who disappeared a year ago has just turned up dead. Her old friends (and their parents!) have secrets to keep, and the four friends are receiving texts from someone who seems to know everything. They wonder if it could be their friend Alison--is she really dead? or is someone else trying to scare them AND spill all of their secrets. My role is Ashley Marin, mother of Hanna. My daughter is the current "It" girl, but has recently been caught shoplifting. I try to sweep her crime under the rug by trying to "get on the good side" of the police officer on the case. I'm a single mom, struggling to maintain our reputation in the community, and trying to balance motherhood, my job, and making good choices for my family... A little edgy too, and of course I will have a secret or two of my own.

3. Have you read or looked over the actual books at all? Do you know anybody else that has?

I read a couple of the books after we filmed the pilot episode. I decided I didn't want to keep reading, because it was too much fun to be surprised by our scripts every week. A lot of what is in the books turns up on the screen, but there's plenty that will be new and different--it will be so much fun for fans of the books AND people who are just discovering the show. It's so fun, and literally gasp inducing in every episode. We all can't wait to learn what will happen next.

4. If you could play one of the teen girls recieving letters from "A" who would you pick and why?

It would be really hard to pick a one character to play, over another...Each one has a distinct personality, and a set of issues to deal with. I think the Hanna role is terrific--she has an internal struggle with her weight issues, and she is working hard not to slip up and lose her "it" girl status...She has a great vulnerability underneath all of her external confidence. I love that dichotomy. Aria is cool, too. She's sophisticated, and arty, and yet she cannot help her ill-advised attraction to her English teacher. What fun to play all that forbidden attraction! I also love the strength of Spencer-- she seems like she has it all and she's always in control, but she's rebelling against the very qualities that she also uses to succeed. A strong woman on the verge--very fun and complex Type A role. And Emily would be an amazing role to play: a girl venturing into unknown sexual territory, but not sure enough to even want to tell her closest friends. She seems sweet and unassuming, but she's sort of the bravest of them all. I love the idea of that deeply personal struggle.

See? I couldn't choose. I'd be happy to play em all!
