Official Summary: Sara Jane Rispoli is a normal sixteen-year-old coping with school and a budding romance--until her parents and brother are kidnapped and she discovers her family is deeply embedded in the Chicago Outfit (aka the mob).
Now on the run from a masked assassin, rogue cops and her turncoat uncle, Sara Jane is chased and attacked at every turn, fighting back with cold fury as she searches for her family. It's a quest that takes her through concealed doors and forgotten speakeasies--a city hiding in plain sight. Though armed with a .45 and 96K in cash, an old tattered notebook might be her best defense--hidden in its pages the secret to "ultimate power." It's why she's being pursued, why her family was taken, and could be the key to saving all of their lives.
Review: Cold Fury is a young adult novel about Sara Jane Rispoli. Sara lives in Chicago with her parents and younger brother. Her father and uncle run the family bake store, or so she thought. On Sara's sixteenth birthday, all she wanted to do was hang out with the cute boy from her school named Max. She did not think she was going to be on the run and trying to find her family.
Sara's family is kidnapped one evening while she is out and it starts a string of events that causes Sara to run for her life. She is determined to find them, but along the way she finds out some of her family's secrets. The notebook that she possesses gives her information on the Chicago Outfit (aka the Mob) and possibly why they were taken. Sara comes to learn that her family has been helping the mob since Al Capone was alive.
During her quest to find her family, she learns that her Uncle Buddy cannot be trusted. Her uncle wants the notebook she has because he believes it has all the secrets he would need to become the head of the family. Sara is now not only being pursued by her family's captors, but by her uncle too. To make matters worse, Sara soon realizes there are dirty cops out to find her too. It seems like there is no place to hide.
In the course of this book, Sara learns a lot about her family and herself. Her impulse to fight helps her to allude the ones who are after her. Her journey helps her discover that there is something about her and her family that is special and is the cause of why so many people are after her.
Any reader who loves to read mysteries and adventure stories will love this book. The author takes you on a wild ride filled with danger and excitement throughout Chicago. The reader will follow Sara through secret passageways and meetings with members of the current Chicago Outfit. Readers can follow Sara on her dangerous mission to discover who took her family and why.
I really enjoyed this book and I hope there is a sequel. Cold Fury has everything a reader would want. There are fights, chases, secrets revealed, and family drama. Sara's quest is suspenseful and riveting. She is definitely a great female character.
