7 Things You Didn't Know About...

7 Fun Facts About the Dave Matthews Band

You've probably heard their songs on various television shows. You might even have purchased an album or two. But did you know any of these interesting facts about the Dave Matthews Band?

1. They Have A Holiday

"Dave Matthews Band Day" is celebrated on September 27th in Charlottesville, Virgina to commemorate the release of their debut album. It's been going strong for more than two decades, and fans around the world get together both in-person and on the web to pay tribute to their favorite group.

2. They're Multimillionaires

Despite having a relatively quiet presence in the industry, they're one of the most financially successful musical acts of all time. From 2000-2009, they brought in more than 500 million from their concerts alone!

3. Their Name Was A Mistake

When they were just starting out as a musical group, they booked a venue under the name "Dave Matthews." The receptionist didn't hear them correctly, however, and jotted them down as "Dave Matthews Band." The rest is history.

4. They're Very Charitable

The band created their own charity, The Bama Works Fund, in 1999. They've since given away hundreds of millions of dollars to hospitals, universities and relief groups.

5. They Don't Mind Piracy

The Dave Matthews Band is a rare band that doesn't forbid cellphones or other recording devices during their shows. In fact, they encourage the practice as long as people don't make money off them, and fans frequently trade their homemade recordings over the Internet.

6. The Members Have Extensive Talents

Dave Matthews, the lead singer, is also an actor and artist. Boyd Tinsley, the violinist, has been classically trained as an orchestra member. Tinsley can also play the mandolin! There's a lot more than what meets the eye when it comes to this group.

7. They Have Close Ties to South Africa

Dave Matthews was born there, and several of their songs were either inspired by or dedicated to anti-apartheid freedom fighters. They feel a close connection to the country and its fight for equality.

These are just a few things you might not have known about the Dave Matthews Band. With such a long and dedicated history in the biz, there's always something new to discover about them, so keep your eyes peeled for even more interesting trivia! You never know when they'll surprise you next!
