Imagine a near future where a cure for aging is discovered and-after much political and moral debate-made available to people worldwide. Immortality, however, comes with its own unique problems-including evil green people, government euthanasia programs, a disturbing new religious cult, and other horrors.

Review: This book is unlike anything I've ever really read. It starts in June 2019 and then ends in June 2079. Now, the book doesn't deal with every moment of all those years, of course. There are a few sections and each time a new one starts, it has jumped to another ten years in the future. However, the entire book does focus on one man named John Farrell. He has the cure for aging so he won't just suddently die from being too old. However, he can still die from other things. He can get in an accident, get cancer, commit suicide, and anything you can imagine. As such, it's kind of amazing how long John does live.

This book gives you all sorts of things to think about. It's very interesting in terms of science, psychology, philosophy, and will definitely keep you thinking. It's not a heavy book though. It's easy to read and I flipped through the book as fast as I could, equally fascinated and horrified by this future world. Because even though the cure for old age has been found, that doesn't mean that everyone agrees. There are people that actively fight against this new life. They refuse to get the cure, but more than that, they assassinate doctors that give it...and even go after your regular men and women that got it.

One of the things that really worked in the book's favor is how it's set up. It's a collection of, what's essentially, blog entries by John as he goes through life. He also includes newspaper articles that dictate events happening, interviews that were published online, and other bits of information that continuously place you in the world that John lives in. You feel a part of it. You question whether you would get the cure or not. You wonder how certain people can do these atrocious things, and not just those that oppose the cure. It's a very fascinating book and one of the most original stories I've read in awhile. It would make a great film, though I think it might be hard to pull it off in the same way the book does.

Finally, I must mention the chapter titles. I've actually thought about doing this for my own writing (and maybe I still will) but now I know it's in at least in one book already published. Some of the titles are actually a quote that will appear somewhere in that particular chapter. Here are a few for example:

"You said you'd love me forever", "A little bit of bloodshed now or a lot later on", and "You look just like me."

Don't these all make you want to read further? I love it! Again, not all the chapters have a title like this, but I would say most of them do...or at the least, half of them do.

My New Favorite Book - Don't Let Me Go

I just reviewed one of my top 2011 picks over at Let's Get Beyond Tolerance. It's also one of my new all-time favorite books. Woah, I know. I bet you're curious to read about it, aren't you? I posted it over there because it's LGBT themed but I know that sometimes people don't notice those reviews, so I'm telling you here. Go, read, leave your thoughts. I'd love you like woah.

But anyway, it's obviously Don't Let Me Go by J.H. Trumble, as you can tell from the cover up above. It's getting some great reviews, so I'm not the only one that's loving this book. It's very, very well-written. It is classified as Adult, but don't let deter you if you don't normally read Adult...the narrator, Nate, is a senior in High School.

Huge Writing Critiques Giveaway!

Author Lee Bantle is hosting a huge writing critique giveaway. I know a lot of fellow bloggers are also writers, and getting a chance to have an author look at your work is wonderful. Here is a fun way to do that.

Include your address info as well. Once you do, I will send that information on to Lee who will send a personal thank you for buying the book and supporting him.

More on the Letters: Inside some of these letters (you won't know until you get your own) will be a note tht you have won a personal critique from Lee. The type of critique will also be noted so you're aware. All letters should be mailed out by the end of April, a month after the contest ends.

If You Win a Critique: You must send an email to Lee stating what type of critique you won and include what you wish him to look over. This must be done by June 15, 2012. Lee will do his best to look over it and send his thoughts as soon as possible, but the actual end date for his critique isn't known. Life sometimes gets in the way so we can't say for sure. However, the goal is to hopefully have your critique to you in the next couple months after June 15. You will get something back if you win a critique though.

Types of Work Lee Will Look At: Please only enter if you have a YA or MG work you wish for him to look at. It doesn't have to be a specific theme, though if you write Contemporary or books with LGBT themes...Lee would be an even better bet!

Review: I will start this review off in all honesty. I did not read the entire book. Now, that's not because it wasn't interesting or even entertaining. It's just no the type of book you really sit down and read all the way through. I like that you can go to various sections and find the authors you're curious to know more about.

As a current English Literature college student, this is definitely the perfect book for me. I got to read up on some of the authors I already love (Oscar Wilde) as well as the ones I've taken classes on (Edgar Allen Poe). I've also taken a British Literature class in the past and found it fun to read about the authors and stories I had to trek my way through in that class.

I may be an English major who loves to read, but that doesn't mean I'm a huge fan of all the classics. Sandra Newman really does make it interesting though!! I wouldn't say I completely agree with her level of fun for all books...but I did like getting her humorous take on the lives and works of various authors. And boy, is this book humorous! It really would be the perfect guide for English majors, as well as readers interested in the classic works --- and I don't just mean the ones who have read a ton of it! This book might just give you an idea of what is actually worth it.

I want to thank the author and TLC Book Tours for letting me check out this book! It was a lot of fun to go through, and it really does include some amusing highlights you'll want to read aloud (sorry to my sister for having to listen to the ones I found! I'm sure she didn't really mind though).

Review: Daniel Radcliffe on Saturday Night Live!

Yep, that would be Daniel Radcliffe playing Casey Anthony's Dog. This was seriously one of the funniest SNL sketches I've seen in awhile, and Dan did an amazing job.

To be honest...Dan was great hosting SNL. Not all of the sketches were amazing, but he took what he was given and hopefully did himself proud! I do think they could have utilized him more, but that's not really his fault. Oh well...maybe he'll be back hosting again in the future.

I was also sad to see a mostly missing Andy Samberg. I think he could have really done something great with Dan.

Now, besides Dan's stint as a dog...he was a great as, you guessed it, Harry Potter. This HP is not quite the same guy we used to know and love...

Sadly, it seems like everyone else is doing much better than The Boy Who Lived, but don't tell him that. He doesn't seem to realize! And Bill Hader as Snape was hilarious!!

New Year's Resolutions-

Do you have them? Do you keep them?

This year, I have two different type of goals. One is fairly typical. I would love to get more in shape and generally be a more healthy person. And of course, in that regard, I'd like to lose some more weight and all that fun stuff. However, I need to find ways to really stay active since my schedule is crazy being a student, working, volunteering, etc. Tough work for us all, I know. So I'd like to know: what do you do for exercise? Also, what types of foods do you recommend that are good but healthy too?

My other goal is to get a literary agent. I'm going to try (along with everything else in my life) to keep up with my personal writing. I started getting more into it over winter break, getting over 10 thousand words. That's awesome, but I have awhile to go...so I really need to keep the momentum going! A huge life-goal of mine is to be a published author, but for this year, I want to do the first big step: get a literary agent, like I said. Anyone else have writing goals?

Official Summary:
September 22, 1928, Massena, New York. Jack Pool's sixteenth birthday. He's been restless lately, especially during this season of more-times-at-the-synagogue than you can shake a stick at. If it wasn't Rosh Hashanah, then it was Yom Kippur, and if it wasn't Yom Kippur, it was the Sabbath. But temple's good for some things. It gives him lots of time to daydream about a beautiful but inaccessible Gentile girl named Emaline.

And if she isn't on his mind, then he's thinking about his music and imagining himself playing the cello with the New York Philharmonic. Yup, music is definitely his ticket out of this remote whistle-stop town—he doesn't want to be stuck here one more minute. But he doesn't realize exactly how stuck he is until Emaline's little sister Daisy goes missing and he and his family are accused of killing her for a blood sacrifice.

Blood Lie was inspired by a real blood libel that took place when a small girl disappeared from Massena, New York, in 1928, and an innocent Jewish boy was called a murderer.

Review: It's hard to imagine that something like this could happen, especially here in the so-called land of the free. The real story and this fictional take might have occured in 1928...but you have to remember that people still do keep these types of stereotypes in their heart.

As for The Blood Lie, it's a pretty short novel that takes place over an even smaller amount of time, but that doesn't mean it's not powerful. Jack is like most kids, with a pretty normal family and friends. He has religion in his life but he isn't the type to shove it in someone's face, especially not being Jewish, where he's the minority. He loves music and hopes that will be his ticket out of his small town and into a bigger, and maybe better, world. And he also has a crush on Emaline, who may like him too, but they can't do anything about it without causing a lot of controversy.

It's hardly fair, the type of town that Jack lives in. And when Daisy goes missing and people point their fingers at Jack and his family, he is - for the first time- truly terrified of what could happen. He knows he's innocent, but these people might not ask questions first, then attack. They might just use crazy rumors and stories about Jewish people as their guide.

One of my favorite parts in the book is when Rabbi Abrams talks to his congregation and tells them a story of hurt, but one also of forgiveness. Jack, understandably, isn't sure if he agrees with this idea...but it's a short story that makes an impact (much like The Blood Lie itself) and readers are sure to get a lot of out of it in terms of Jack's situation and their own lives.

I really liked the ending. Not everything is shiny and happy and new, but it has a silver lining, and you know that maybe things aren't perfect...but they could get better.

Upcoming Auctions for Scholarship - Apply, Donate

Starting on January 1 (I hope it starts on time), I'm going to be hosting another set of auctions. This time all the money will go to my scholarship winner. I call it a scholarship because I want the money to be used for education of some sort. I can't control that of course, but hopefully that's what the winner will do with it.

Right now the "winner" will get $250 thanks to the amazing author, Jessica Verday. The auctions will just add to that amount, so hopefully we'll have a substantial amount that will entice more people to apply.

Auctions will end at the end of January (or early February) but you can apply until March 1.

This post is to make you aware of the upcoming auctions so you can bid and help out. It's also to get people to apply.

I liked the friendship with Angela - it portrays what friendship is all about. They are always there for each other.

The fact in the end is a true statment- a man should not define you. All women have the power to make themself happy.

In Which I Explain My Break...

I know it's been quite a while since I last posted, and even then, it hasn't been a ton of variety in the posts. However, my last semester was ending and I had a ton of homework, papers, tests, projects, etc. to do. I'm finished for a little while now and I'm also home from my holiday visiting my brother.

I've been doing a lot of reading (and I'm still reading) so I hope to have some more reviews posted soon. Besides that, I want to make 2012 a good year for the blog. More posts, more variety, and hopefully some more giveaways for you. I posted a Review Policy/About Me at the top of the blog, and I hope to have a We Comment Back post up soon too...which is my long-running policy that if you comment on one of my posts, I will comment on one of yours. This doesn't count for giveaway posts though...I won't comment on your giveaway (unless it contains a review/interview as well OR I want to enter) but I'll try and comment on something else too. PLUS, if you comment on my blog for a giveaway...I might not comment back because those don't really count beyond "enter me" so much.

Again, this policy will go on a page so everyone can see it...but I thought I'd share it here for now in case you're reading this.

If There Were Another Season...

If you were the writer for the next episode of the next season, what would happen? What does the future look like in Smallville?

Oh gosh, this is a really hard question. I'm not sure how Smallville would look. I suppose I would start it out with Clark living a full double life, now that he has the iconic uniform. As such, he has to save Smallville (and maybe someone really close to him there...) from a new evil villian. It will be a bit of a struggle since he's worried about being noticed, maybe even not being noticed and what that means, and then of course...just being able to succeed and make everything right.

I know these aren't technically exact ideas. I think I'd fail at being a Smallville writer, but I could always pick my sister or dad's brains. They've both grown up on the lore of Superman and now that Clark has officially become him, they might be a good place to start on exact ideas.

Obviously, the tension between being Smallville and loving Lana should play a major role too. You gotta use that romance to its fullest, right? ;-)

Clark Kent Becomes Superman

The end of Smallville was pretty powerful. It was interesting to hear his father tell him not to forget Smallville and his parents and everyone there. Definitely a deep moment. When the suit started to come through the ice, I loved the dramatic music. It really is a big moment. Smallville is about Clark Kent growing up to be Superman and seeing the suit for the first time and then Clark flying? Good stuff.

I think him finally flying was cool. It was like he was always meant to do this, and he just took off. There was no fear or hesitation. He was finally Superman. While he did not wear the suit, that's okay. I suppose we can always look toward movies for that. It might have been kind of weird to really see Clark flying around in a Superman suit...

However, the best part was right before Clark took off flying. The suit had come up in the ice and all of a sudden, his dad is standing before him. It was nice to see him again, after his death. He's telling Clark to remember Smallville and he gives him the suit. It's a nice, poignant moment.

Why I want it:

I absolutely loooooved Unearthly, which turned out to be my favorite angel book. And then there was this boy named Tucker that I totally had a crush on in there... Now, I NEED to know what will happen next. Also, that part in the summary where it says someone close to Clara will die? Totally making me nervous! Please don't be Tucker!

At least I only have to wait a little over a month to read it. And, hello there pretty cover.

Review: To be honest, I live in Kentucky and I've never been on a horse. I know, I know, it's kind of a tragedy. My sister has though and she loves it. I think she wishes she could have ridden them more...maybe got lessons or something. My aunt lives in Texas though and she loves them, rides them, works with them, etc. So when I got an email about this book...I thought of her.

Horse Sayings is just the latest in the Wit and Wisdom series. People from all over the world submit paintings, drawings, and photographs of the book's topic...and voila, a new book!! This one is about horses but they also have one for dogs (animal-wise...they have a few more books too). Inbetween this artwork are various quotes and sayings that have to do with the topic. They go from Plato to John Adams and all sorts of other people. There are even sections within the book such as Horse Sense, Competing, and Ancient Wisdom.

As you can see from the cover, there are sorts of styles within the photography and artwork. One of my favorites is in the bottom right hand corner. Isn't that a cutie?

The book from their website is $22.46, which does seem a bit steep. I think the book is nice for true horse lovers...especially if they love photography or artwork as well. I'm a fan of quotes, myself, so that was a nice addition.

I'm passing my copy along to my aunt, so hopefully she will enjoy it. And hey, maybe she'll let others know if it's something she truly enjoys!!

Smallville...The End, The Collection

Smallville has finally come to an end. Ten long seasons and this is it. It's kind of sad, but now you can get the huge complete collection...just in time for the holidays too!!

As for the best moments of show...I really loved the first few season with Lex becoming darker and darker. It was very interesting to see him Clark get along, when you know what will eventually happen.

Lana was never a huge favorite of mine, but her and her kryptonite necklace was quite interesting.

I loved Clark's parents. His poor dad. :( But they were always really wonderful people.

Again, I think the beginning was fun because it really was "Superman in High School" and what would happen. He has crushes, family issues, friends.

As for the last season...I actually didn't see the last season, but it sounds like it really went out on a bang, especially with the last episode. I believe my sister watched it and loved it though. She was always a huge Smallville fan.

This complete collection would go over very well in my family, as almost everyone in the house enjoys it.

New Covers Revealed -Boyfriend from Hell + Earth Angel

Author E. Van Lowe has redesigned his book covers with an older audience in mind. I've read Boyfriend from Hell (the first in his new series) and it's definitely something that teens and adults would both like....so I think it's kind of fun to have some sexier, more mature covers.

Review:

For awhile, I read a lot of books and then didn't get a review posted. This is one of those. It doesn't mean I didn't like it. I just got sidetracked by other things. Oh, life.

Anyway, beyond all of that...I really enjoyed this one. I was curious to check it out but I didn't know how much I would like it or not. You see, I'm not really a sports person and Stupid Fast sounded like a book that would deal with a little too many sports. But it doesn't. I think readers who are fans of sports and then those like me would both enjoy this one.

It's all about growing up, dealing with harder things, and learning to accept that not everyone is perfect; not even adults.

Felton wants to be normal...but he's never been. All of a sudden, he's fast and strong and the athletic kids are paying attention to him. But at the same time, his mom starts to fall apart and his brother is freaking out. Felton can't handle it all. He just wants to work out, deliver papers for his friend who is away for the summer, and swoon over the girl staying in his house. Eventually reality catches up to everyone and Felton learns just what it means to be strong.

Review:

I love Rosemary Clement-Moore’s books. Just absolutely love them. So going into Texas Gothic, I had high hopes that it would be just as fantastic as her other books. Luckily, Texas Gothic surpassed my hopes, and became my favorite Clement-Moore book.

I could probably sum Texas Gothic up in these words: hawt* cowboy, witches, ghosts, archeology, hilarious moments, and oh, did I mention the very hawt cowboy? All of these things make up one fantastic book that I recommend everyone reads. The archeology bits had the inner archeology/history nerd in me shouting for joy. I just love that stuff. And the parts with the dead bodies and ghosts were so creepy.

I loved reading about Amy. She was very easy to connect to and I enjoyed her journey. As soon as I started reading and got to the part where she ran outside in only her bra and underwear to chase a cow away from her car, I knew that I was going to love Amy and the book.

And then there’s the hawt cowboy, also known as Ben. I loved Ben right from the start, even though he acted like a jerk on and off throughout the book. Can I just say that I loved that Amy did not put up with his crap? Because that is something you don’t always see in books where the guy sometimes acts like a jerk.

All of the secondary characters were fantastic, from Amy’s sister Phin, to the university students working on digging up the bodies. I really loved Phin the most though. It was interesting how smart she was in regards to science, but when it came to other people she was totally clueless. I also really loved the dogs and the goats! The goats especially. Mainly because I found the way they acted hilarious.

If you are looking for a book that includes witches, ghosts, dead bodies and a fantastic mystery, then look no further then Texas Gothic. And if you need another reason to read it? The book takes place the summer before Amy starts college, which is something I absolutely loved.**

Review: One of the many things that I loved about this book is that it's truly a good read for adults and teens. I know a ton of YA books are being read by adults, and that's amazing...but ENVY actually focuses on the adult characters. While twins, Hayley and Taylor, are the main characters and their story is the main focus, others are highlighted as well. You get fellow classmates, the parents of teens around Port Gamble, and more that really come together to make this amazing book.

Normally I shy away from most books in a series because it's hard for me to keep up, so I'm really happy that I found this one as soon as it came out. Now, sadly, I have to wait about another year for the next one...but that's okay, if it gives everyone else a shot to read this one. Believe me, it's worth it. There isn't a ton of romance...if that's what you want...but there is a lot of suspense, horror (and not necessarily in the traditional sense), envy (of course), murder (oh yes!!) and definitely a lot of secrets. After all, for a small town where everyone knows everyone, you know there has to be some silent, deadly things lying in the wings.

I loved the mystery surrounding Hayley and Taylor and their "abilities" as well as their own back story. This sublot keeps you wondering until the end as well. And woah, the end!! You won't quite believe it. It's not really something you'd expect to find in a YA novel, but isn't that great? Along with the multiple points of view, this is just another way that ENVY defies expectations of YA novels. And I hope it picks up in other novels as well. I like finding books that can be a truly wonderful cross-over novel.

Overall, I loved this book. I don't love everything...but this is one book that was just really, really interesting from the beginning to the end. And I want more people to read it!!

I really do hope a lot of you will pay attention to this. Tomorrow is November 1 and it's supposed to be the start of the auctions for the Living Beyond Tolerance Scholarship (please do apply for this or spread the word!!) However, I know that it's going to be late...so should it be less of November or should I hold off and do the auctions in January?

I'm leaning toward January but I'm not the one bidding, so I want to see what you all thought. If I wait, you will get an extension on applying for the scholarship (for one thing) and we can hopefully get more donations to auction off (for another thing). I'd really like more help in spreading the word too. I know some people have, so thank you, but please please please don't think you can't help.

Tweet, facebook, tell friends/family/classmates, blog about!!, even write ELLEN. I'm not kidding. If we could get her to tweet about it....that would be amazing. I'm not talking ELLEN for donations, but more to get the word out and have people actually apply for the scholarship. That's the main thing.

Bar Stools for My Future Home (Which I do Imagine)

I really love kitchens that have an island. I don't like it to be the only place people can eat...as family tables are nice and allow more room, but for a quick snack or breakfast? Or even just to bake at? Very nice! But you know what you need for these? A bar stool!! There is just a site for that...I bet you're thinking like me....a site for everything!! But there does seem to be, and you can find all that at moreballstools.com.

One of the things that I do find most annoying about bar stools are the lack of a back rest. I know it makes me sound like an old fart, but I really do have a bad back if it's not properly supported. But guess what? You can get bar stools that have a back...just look at the picture up top! Perfect, huh?

And there are all sorts of other types as well. You can get a wooden stool if you want a classic look or you can go a bit funky and new! I really like this idea. Here are a couple pictures of these types-

Purple is my favorite color, so this would be really fun. Plus, it would make a fun computer chair if not a bar stool in the regular sense.

It's like a mini couch! It looks so comfy. And the brown color is nice and sophisticated. Perfect for many.

In Which I KINDLY Ask for Help from the Blogging World

It's been a hectic week. I promise I'll have more posts soon. But at any rate, between school and personal things...it's been kind of difficult to get much work done. I won't go into details on the blog but just please keep a family friend of mine in your thoughts. It would really mean a lot.

For now though, can I please get your assistance? It would really mean a lot to me. Here are the details of things I need help with spreading the word about.

First: E. Van Lowe is offering to fly and visit a book club who decides to read his book. You don't have to read it right now but you DO need to get the books. Full details are here. If you have questions, feel free to email me: lauren51990 AT aol DOT com.

But please, if you have enough people around you from friends, family, to bloggers and other authors...think about setting up a book club. Or use your own book club if you already have one!! I'd really like people to let others know about this though. Tell your schools, libraries, blog about it, facebook and tweet it too if you think that'll help.

Crime and Punishment...via TV

After Axl leaves his dirty smelly socks lying around the house one too many times, Mike punished his son by banning him from playing his basketball team's final game. Given the Heck legacy on the basketball team, do you think it was the best decision? Have you ever, or had a parent, give the time that didn't fit the crime? Were you able to get out of it and how?

Wow, I do think this is a bit harsh. I can understand if Axl had done something really wrong or innappropriate, but I'm sure a better punishment could have been found this particular "crime." I guess his dad was just a little fed up. I suppose that can happen. I'm not a parent, and when I was growing up I was honestly the kid that never really got into trouble, so I don't have a story that fits this. I do know that some of my friends would get in trouble for really dumb things, like a brush going missing... they aren't my stories to tell, so I won't go into more detail. But sometimes parents go overboard, I can say that.

However, when watching a sitcom, it's always pretty funny! So revel in Axl's misery and get the second season NOW!

I heard about Scent Natural for the first time in the blog world, which just goes to show you how much I appreciate reviews and/or giveaways online. They do show you some great products. Yes, yes, I was sent a free bottle for review...however, this is something I'd keep in mind for future gifts I buy myself because it's such a unique gift idea.

You see, Scent Natural allows you to create your very own perfume. You can choose up to five scents to add to your perfume, but don't worry. If you aren't sure what works well together, you can pick one scent off their full list and they will give you a few choices of options. This way allows you to pick the main scent and then they add the other scents that can go with the mix.

For example, my mom and I chose Vanilla and they gave us this list: Vanilla, Honeydew, Pear, and Cucumber...so we chose it, and those are our scents!

Then you go and pick the type of bottle you want, the color the perfume will be in the bottle (you can pick pink, blue, clear or yellow), and then you actually name it!

We went with a rounded bottle and silver cap on top with a yellow color. Actually naming the perfume was much harder...but we finally decided to go with Blessed. You can actually upload an image to go on the bottle, but we just stuck with using a simple name. And of course, our perfume smelled quite lovely...not too strong!

Each bottle is about $50 plus $6 or so for shipping. I know it sounds like a lot, but this is still a wonderful gift. If you have a budget around this much, this is all you need for that person. It's perfume that's fun and will last awhile, plus it's way more personalized than most items.

However, if you want perfume for party gifts, wedding favors, or even for a book launch...you can get each bottle at $18 if you buy at least 10. The price gets lower as you buy more bottles in bulk. Nice, huh?!

Now, here are my mom's own thoughts (AKA Chris): A fun idea and unique gift. It's also easy to do. I like that you can make your own scent or they give you suggestions to help. The packaging (the bottle came in a silky, drawstring bag the color of our perfume) was a really nice touch. I'm very happy with the quality of the product.

I've been pretty sucky when it comes to reviewing books. I'm hoping to get some more posted faster. That doesn't mean I'm not reading. I am. And some good stuff. So I gotta tell you right? Well, Charlie Joe Jackson's Guide to NOT Reading is a really fun book. I'm a huge fan of reading, and I know if you're reading this you might be too, but that doesn't mean you can't relate to having to do something but wishing you didn't...whether it's a class in school, chores, or hanging with the grandparents.

Charlie has a set way of reading, which includes reading as little as possible and getting other people to do more of the work. It's going along nicely until the whole plan unravels around him. Instead of sucking it up and reading the book for school (that would be easy, right?) Charlie comes up with a big, complicated mess of a scheme to have someone else read his books...he's even willing to let another boy date the girl he really likes!! You gotta admit...that's dedication.

I was surprised by the slight twist near the end of the book. Maybe people will know it from the beginning or see it coming, but I think it's pretty clever and sneaks up on you. It's fun though and I really enjoyed the book. It's a pretty quick read, and it's great for readers and non-readers alike...as well as people of all ages. It's a middle school book...but that doesn't mean Charlie can't speak to all of our inner rebels!!

Another Dent in the Wall!

In one episode, Brick shares Sue's room where they accidently knock a hole in her wall, they try to fix it but only make it worse. They attempt to cover it up by putting a poster over it but it doesn't work. Have you ever been in that situation with your sibling or good friend? Did you try and cover it up or did you just admit it?

I haven't actually done this! I know it seems to happen often in TV shows. My dad's knocked a couple dents in the wall though...we haven't covered them up, of course, because he's old enough to admit something like that! haha! It is kind of amusing though. As I sit, I can see a tiny dent in my living room.

I know this isn't a very interesting note...but I honestly don't have a story to share regarding this. How about you though?

New Show - About Abby (Episode One and Two Reviews)

About Abby is a web show that you can currently view on their website or subscribe via youtube. The entire first season is online now, but they need more support and awareness to get the second season out. So how about watching the episodes with me? I have mini reviews for the first two episodes below. If you go and watch, leave your thoughts in the comments. Feel free to comment before you watch too if you wish. I'll keep posting reviews for the rest of the season as well...and then I'm going to do an interview with Sassy Mohen, the director. Episode One –About Abby and the Aussie

I really found myself enjoying this show. For one thing, none of the episodes go past 10 minutes so it’s perfect to watch at pretty much any given time. That’s not to say it’s totally appropriate for work, as this first episode does contain sex. Don’t worry; nothing graphic and nothing out of place or added for gratuity sake. That’s when it bothers me. However, this is a really fun first episode. I’m already a fan of Abby’s slightly sweet and naïve nature and the love of her best friends, Micah and Caroline, who is particularly fun. She definitely seems to be the wild, more experienced, and quite amusing best girl friend.

Episode Two- About Abby and the Ex

Another fun episode, but this time with a deeper message attached. Abby hates the idea of anyone cheating, and she vows never to be “the other girl.” When she finds out news about Micah, she’s a bit disappointed…but in the end, she might know how he feels. This was another shorter episode, not even reaching 10 minutes, but again, it’s perfect. I like that you can fit in episodes quicker than most shows. I can definitely see the Friends/Sex in the City vibe, but having never really been interested in those shows (nor watched them), I like About Abby. I like that they are relatively younger, that there are three central friends to get connected to, and that the stories and characters in general make me think of my friends and the people I know.

Lying in The Middle

Early in the second season, Brick discovers what a little white lie is from his parents, realizing they only did it to protect him from the reality. When was the last time you told your kids, or your family a little white lie? Did they ever find the truth out?

I think everyone uses white lies. To be honest, these are normally the lies that people don't find out. I mean, it's usually "you look nice" or "i like that top" when it's the exact opposite. Just little things that keep people happy. Simple too, which is why they aren't usually found out about unless the white lie is kind of bigger...but those aren't really the type I use as often. I can't say I've been caught in a white lie per se. Maybe one of those "I don't really feel good" to get out of doing something and people eventually realize you were fine, or you could have gone.

I'm not the type of person to lie all that often. I try and tell the truth as much as I can, but sometimes it just happens.

1. Without going into too much detail, how did Cupcake Envy first begin?

Cupcake Envy started out in my kitchen as a hobby back in 2006. Having 2 boys, I really enjoyed making individual treats for them that were artistic and fun. My skills improved and the designs got crazier and before long, I launched Cupcake Envy specializing in custom miniature cakes we call Cakelets.

2. Do you have an actual shop or is it strictly online? And if the latter, do you think you'll ever open a store people can visit?

I share a commercial kitchen space when working on orders and I am traveling about once a month throughout the country teaching cakelet designs so I do not see a retail space in Cupcake Envy’s future at this time.

3. What are some of the most unique cakelets you've made?

Gosh, there have been so many interesting design requests throughout the years. The one that sticks out the most is from a young woman requesting a cakelet for her boyfriend. She wanted a foot cakelet with the 2^nd toe being extra long. Apparently, he has a very long 2^nd toe and they joke about it a lot. Weird? Yes. Did I take the order? Absolutely!

4. What is something you've never been asked to make, but would love to? Or what is something you've made only once or twice, that was a lot of fun?

Sometimes I get a specific design in mind that I think would be really cool so I create it to add to my portfolio. The Zombie Attack themed cakelets were one of those ideas I cakeletized and the response was amazing. I like anything new and different….it’s no fun creating the same design over and over.

5. If you could work with any TV show, movie, or book, to create a themed cakelet...what would it be and why?

There are many people in the media world that I admire and would love to make a cakelet for them. The list is eclectic and so random so I will just leave it at I think everyone deserves a really cool cakelet design.

6. What else should people know about Cupcake Envy?

Cupcake Envy has a lot in the works right now that when the time comes, we will certainly announce. Right now, we continue to teach in the US, Canada and abroad as well as offering how to DVD’s and local cakelet workshops held in NC. Most importantly, Cupcake Envy is a family affair. I am a mom of 2 boys that had an idea and ran with it. They’ve watched this business grow from our kitchen to where we are today. I can only hope that I am modeling to them a good work ethic, the guts to take risks, celebrate the successes and overcoming failures, and most of all, to follow your passion. It’s all about family.

In a Cell Phone Minute is a really cute, and sometimes thought-provoking book. It's funny, it's a bit sad, and it's even poignant. It's all types of things in a tiny size. I didn't get the actual book to review, but I hear the cover is a flip cover...to act like a real cell phone, and I believe it's a relatively small book so it's easy to carry around. What a perfect stocking stuffer!! Know someone obsessed with their cell phone? (I can name a few right now...) This would be great for them, and it's never too soon to talk gifts!

This book is broken into sections like Where R U?, Lost & Found, and even 911. Cell phones are a huge part of our society these days, and you can't go anywhere without finding one person with a cell phone, and most likely out and in use somehow.

While each section of the book focuses on a different theme, one thing remains the same...the set up of the stories. They are all only about a page in length focusing on some way that their own cell phone or someone else's impacted their life. It could be something serious like a man getting voicemails that family members left him on 9/11...he worked in one of the Twin Towers...or something more fun like meeting a future girlfriend or boyfriend.

One of the humorous stories I read was about a woman who almost shipped her cell phone with a package. Luckily, someone called her as she was about to hand it over at the post office....she heard the ringing inside the box, unwrapped it to retrieve her phone, and then packed it back up! Who would have thought? All sorts of things can happen, I guess.

This is definitely a fast read, but it's fun. It reminds me of websites/books like Texts from Last Night and FML. It would make a perfect book turned site, instead of the opposite. Everyone seems to have some kind of cell story after all. Again, the book may be short...but I think it's a cute thing to have around and share with friends. Just read or re-read a story here and there to make you think, give you inspiration, or just make you laugh!

Handling Activities in the Middle

The Heck's have their son Axl in football and daughter Sue in cross country. They try their best to attend their children's events but often disagree on which event they want to attend. Has this ever happened to you and your family, or have too many events and too little time? How did you resolve it?

I honestly can't remember a specific instance where too much was going on at the same time, but I'm sure it's happened. When I was younger, I used to play soccer, as well as my sister...and my brother played football and baseball (depending on the year). While I was only playing soccer, my sister did basketball, volleyball, softball, and cheerleading at some point in elementary school. The two of us also had ceramics on Saturday mornings, while I had a weekly Girl Scout meeting.

Obviously we didn't do ALL of these things at the same time...but I'm sure a few of them were always overlapping. Sometimes it comes down to when things are happening and making it all fit. Otherwise, we can switch who goes where. For example, my dad was usually with my brother...and my mom with my sister and me. We tried to always see all of each other's events though.

The Perfect Place for Mini Cakes!

My family was lucky enough to try some Cake O's from this wonderful company. We were sent the 6 Piece Assorted Sampler ($17) which gives you the chance to try a variety of Cake O's. I really enjoyed this instead of the other 6 piece set (50 cents less) because, with that, you must choose only two flavors. It's a lot more fun to try 6 different ones! The ones we were sent were:

Coconut

and Lemon

You can also get Chocolate Mint, Strawberry, Carrot Cake, or Brownie (I want to try this one for sure!!)

My mom (Chris at the top of this review) tried all of these, while I've only eaten a bit of the coconut. I love the idea of these and I'm definitely going to eat some of the others too, but she really wanted to help with the review...and I wanted to get this up so you all know to buy, buy, buy.

1. The prices are really good and each Cake O is a good size. They would make great gifts or party favors.

2. You get a lot of options, and there is sure to be something for EVERYONE. And if you want a gift for a couple, you can get the cheaper six pack and pick a flavor for ONE and another flavor for the OTHER. This way, they both get three.

3. As I said above, these are a perfect size. If you just want a little something sweet without feeling guilty, you should definitely check these out.

Now for the breakdown of the Cake O's we recieved (with my mom's thoughts):

Red Velvet: Very good

Mocha: Good, but there wasn't as strong of a mocha taste as she wanted. For those that want less, this is a good choice.

Vanilla Chocolate: Good, but she couldn't taste the vanilla as much as the chocolate. It seems to be less vanilla and more chocolate, instead of half and half as you might first think.

Chocolate Peanut Butter: Very good. With this, you can really taste the peanut butter.

Coconut: She loved this, definitely her favorite. Just the right amount of coconut.

Lemon: Good, a very tangy lemon taste, which she enjoyed.

Review: Having loved The Adoration of Jenna Fox, I was really excited to read the next book. It's not exactly a sequel. It takes place many years later and the only characters you see again are Locke, Kara, and Jenna. But that's okay, because it is all about them. I wish I had the time to re-read Adoration, but I could still follow along with this book. Pearson made sure that this book could be a stand-alone. Yeah, it's nice to read both of them in the order they were intended, but it's not neccessary.

This book was narrated by Locke, instead of Jenna, which I enjoyed. As you read, it's obvious that the book would be very boring if it was just Jenna's point of view again, but I also just liked that you saw how Locke viewed everything. All of a sudden he's in a new world, trying to hold on to the past memories he had and the love he shared with both girls. It isn't always easy though. He's not a boy, he's not a man. He's not even completely human. But he has his mind, his memories. Where does that bring him?

As for Kara, you see her through Locke's eyes and he feels bad for failing her. He wants his love to be enough, but it can't be. Kara is vastly different from the girl she used to be. For 260 years, her mind was held in a black void...only Locke's voice to hold her together. The rest of the time she is left to live in her memories or withstand the darkness. When they are finally free, she is angry. She wants to make someone pay for what she went through. She wants a victim. Most of all, she wants to know where Jenna went when her voice left theirs in the dark...and why she didn't come back to save them too.

I really enjoyed the setting. It's a future America with Bots and all sorts of new folk. Some things haven't changed but a lot of technology has definitely "improved" or changed, however you want to look at it.

This book gives you a lot to think about, which is nice. That's not to say it's a hard book to read, but it's not fluff!

Behind the Scenes of Gossip Girl

The complete fourth season of Gossip Girl not only has 22 episodes filled with love, betrayal, friendship and scandal, but also never-before-seen features such as unaired scenes and gag reels! And if you want some features that nobody has seen before, then make sure you look for Bisoux a Paris (an inside look at Serene and Blair's summer in the City of Lights), The Art of Making an Episode (an in-depth look at how Gossip Girl stories build from page to screen) and unaired scenes!

In this sesason, you get to see Blair intern at W magazine which is kind of cool. I used to imagine working at a magazine at some point. I wonder if the extra footagle will give us a look behind the scenes of this? I couldn't say for sure, but it would be uber fascinating!

However, I love seeing a cast have fun and a DVD with a gag reel? I can't really say no! You want to know that the people you're watching on the screen can relax, have fun, and not take everything so seriously...especially with a show like Gossip Girl. It's full of drama and craziness...and even fab traveling, like Blair and Serena's trip to Paris...so a backstage laugh here and there? Nice!

Review: After reading L.E. Modesitt Jr.’s The Magic of Recluse, I could understand how it spawned a sixteen book long saga. It’s a fresh interpretation of the stereotypical fantasy novel. There were a few things that bothered me though. First, the story starts off rather slowly and left me as bored as the protagonist. The story didn’t really pick up until Chapter 6.

The other nuisance I had with the book was the protagonist’s ogling of every female he met. Minor problems with the book aside, The Magic of Recluse is rather fascinating in its unusual take on magic and its compelling plot. This book is a good choice if you’re bored with generic fantasies and want something a little different.

Recommended for ages 14+.

For those that don't remember, I used to post a lot more things regarding music as we actually started out as a purely music "magazine" or blog. This is just a small step in getting back to a more eclectic mix of posts, so leave your thoughts and spread the word.

1. What makes up the majority of your set...original or cover songs?

Originals. We like to play covers every once in a while, but we’ve always focused on writing and performing our own songs.

2. You just released your EP, The Book. That's the name of one of your songs, but why did you decide to name the whole album after it?

“The Book” sets the mood for the whole EP. When I write lyrics, I tend to write about feelings from past relationships. Almost every song I’ve written is about a boy.. Haha.. “The Book” is an accumulation of memories, feelings and hope in a relationship. Plus, it has an awesome build up in the intro.

3. What's your writing process like...either music, lyrics, or both?

It seems to change from song to song. Sometimes I’ll write a complete song and we’ll jam on it as a band. Usually we all contribute to writing the music. I usually write lyrics and come up with the melodies; however, Steven and Hunter have a lot of input too. Most of the melodies and lyrics actually come to me in the shower…awkward but true. Something about it just clears my head and gives me time to process the day. I mean, who doesn’t like to sing in the shower??

4. You currently aren't with a label, but is that a goal of yours for the future? What would be your ideal label?

Sony! Ha, j/k. Really I feel that with how things are in the music industry, being signed to a label doesn’t mean much. Obviously that’s where the real money is, but I don’t think that any of us are planning on music being our main job. I just want to keep writing our own music, playing with great bands, and having a good time with my friends… If one day the opportunity of signing to a label arises and we still get to do all those things then I’d totally sign, but as of now were doing just fine.

5. Do you think Suburban Revival will be a long-time band or do you play purely for fun?

I don’t see us ending this any time soon. School and work can make it hard to schedule a ton of shows, but we always play when we can. We take the music we write seriously but it’s definitely fun! If it weren’t fun we’d stop.

6. I have to ask...how did you come up with the band name, and does it actually mean something specific?

I have no idea. Haha. Apparently we are reviving the suburbs?

7. You've played with The Ataris a few times, even playing some of their own songs with lead singer Kris Roe. How did that all come about? Any fun stories from those shows?

First off, the Ataris are one of my favorite bands ever. Kris is a really nice guy and we’ve greatly enjoyed every time we’ve played shows with them. We first played with the Ataris in our previous band a few years ago. We talked with them at the show and stayed in contact afterward. Luckily we’ve been able to play with them pretty much every time they’ve come through the Cincinnati area since then.

When Kris came through on his last acoustic tour, he was awesome enough to come up on stage sing a few songs with us. We played a Get Up Kids cover and a few Ataris songs. It was a blast! As for funny stories…I remember the first time we played with the Ataris at the Madison Theater a few years ago… Before the show we were hanging out in the back alley behind the venue and saw this Dodge Neon pull up to park and it hit the Ataris’s van. We were like “woah!” It pretty much just bumped straight into it. The car backed up and pulled much more carefully into the parking spot. The driver opened the door and guess who gets out…Kris. Haha. The best part is he looked at the van like “oops” and then just kinda played it off like nothing happened.. Haha.

8. And finally...if you had to write a whole album based on a book, what would it be and why?

Cat’s Cradle. It’s my favorite book ever. It’s so full of material, I could write an entire album about it. Maybe two! Of course, the Bokonon Calypsos would be included and I’d write at least one song about ice nine. “Don't be a fool! Close this book at once! It is nothing but foma!”

My Dream Vacation...

Summer vacations are always a blast. In Season 4, ep. 1 Belles de Jour, Serena and Blair enjoy their summer vacation in Paris trying to take their minds off of home. When Serena and Blair take this lavish trip to Paris, they experience the food, culture, fashion, and even romance! Blair meets a French royal that wants to sweep her off her feet, gets into a major spat with Serena, and even bumps into her ex, Chuck. Trips are always full of excitement and letdowns; in this blog post please discuss your dream vacation.

My dream vacation? I'd really like to go to Europe. England, for one thing. I've always been a bit fascinated by the country so it would be great to experience that. My sister has been to France twice, and I think going there would be equally as interesting. The language would be much more different, as well as the food and the culture...but that would be intriguing. Visiting Paris like Blair did would be wonderful. I'm not sure I want an actual prince, but one that treats me like a princess? Sign me up! It's the city of lights, the city of love...it would be wonderful to experience that fully.

Hello Lauren! Thanks so much for having me as a guest at your blog. Yes! I always have playlists for my books—usually several in fact. For The Fox Inheritance, I had three different playlists. One with all the songs I listened to, another that was a shortened version, and still another that was very short with only very dark, quiet songs. Below, via Grooveshark, I’ve listed the ones I used most often so you can listen to them and see who the artists are.

I think the song that got me in the “zone” the most and was unique to The Fox Inheritance was Today by Jefferson Airplane. It was dark, and melancholy, and hopeful all at the same time. And it also had this uneasy underlying feeling of an unhealthy lopsided relationship. In the story, Locke and Kara have the ability to speak together through their minds only. Sometimes you can’t tell who is speaking, where one voice begins and another ends. That’s how I imagined this song, the voice going back and forth between the two of them.

If anyone has any other great songs for writing to, or songs they think might fit the book, I’d love to hear them!

Ooshirts: I'm Tired. Can't We Just Be Death Eaters?

ooshirts is a website where you can personally design your own t-shirts, hoodies, and more. I was given a $50 gift code to use the site and create my own design...which would then be printed out on my choice of top and sent to me. I ended up only using a little over $30 for a black hoodie. I used white lettering and a fun print to make a statement across the chest.

It says: I'm tired. Can't we just be death eaters?

Harry Potter fans will recognize the "death eaters" but you have to watch A Very Potter musical online to understand the full line. Basically, it's something the Draco Malfoy character says...and is a favorite line of mine from the show. I find myself quoting it a lot, along with the friend who finally made me sit down and watch this show. Harry Potter fans (especially those who love the books) are sure to enjoy it.

This site is great as they give you complimentary shipping and they have some good group discounts if you want to design shirts for a team/family or even your friends. Twilight fans? Make shirts with your team in a nicer fashion than glitter glue! Or create your own school shirt to sport at the upcoming games. Who knows? You have many options!

If anyone makes their own Harry Potter shirts, I'd love to see the designs or quotes. You can use the site's help or upload your own idea of a design. Pick your color shirt, pick the size. It's all up to you. Mine is a fairly plain item but it's me, it's super comfy, and I can't wait for the fall so I can start wearing it around!

Gossip Girl Fashion with Jenny

When fans discuss Gossip Girl, they talk about the fashion almost as much as they dish on the scandal! Whether Serena and Blair are dressed in designer ready-to-wear or couture off the runway, their ensembles are always high-end and on trend. Each girl’s style reflects her individual personality--Blair’s style is classic Upper East Side chic while Serena’s style is sexy and effortless. In this blog post, please discuss your favorite looks/styles/fashion trends during the 4^th season and what items you would most want to buy after seeing them on Gossip Girl.

Honestly, I think I'd skip Blair and Serena...and go with more of Jenny's style. I'm not super girly, and I always kind of like the funky looks. Jenny definitely pulls that off. I'm actually going to include a photo I found online of a cool outfit Jenny wears in the fourth season.

I'm a big fan of layers so this is great. Normally, I go with tights...but Jenny's panty-hose aren't too bad as they are black. They are kind of a thinner version of tights. The cute dress with an overcoat is also fun. It screams the fall to me...which is soon upon us. I would love to buy a dress like Jenny's...and the shoes too if I could wear heels!!

Overall, I like the idea of adding a little goth to your girl.

Summary: Lillian tried to help Penny, but she didn't think she'd actually fake her own kidnapping. When she does, Lil has to deal with all sorts of people trying to find information...Penny's parents, the police, even the FBI.

Now Lil is on a road trip with her best friend, Josh, to try and find Penny. She believes she's in Oregon...but they have to get there first.

Review: Don't Stop Now had an interesting premise. How bad can a person have it to fake their own kidnapping? I liked that you got a look inside Penny's head at the end of some of the chapters. These are thougths from previous moments though. You don't know what's happening in her present life until Lil and Josh find her. And then what happens? I like the idea of road trip books. I learned about some different landmarks in the various states the duo traveled in.

One of the things that felt a bit overdone was the relationship between Lil and Josh. Lil loves Josh, but he just wants to be BFFs. However, I liked that Halpern made Josh real. He wasn't all suave and perfect. He had bad habits, immature ideas, and he wasn't always the "catch" you would think Lil would want. But he was her friend and he was there for her.

I wasn't a huge fan of this novel, but overall, it wasn't too bad.

Relationship Drama a la Gossip Girl

Relationships play a huge role in Gossip Girl. Chuck and Blair, the show’s most popular couple, have been on-and-off throughout the Gossip Girl series. They are consistently at ends with each other, but their love seems to have no bounds. However, as the season progresses, Blair begins to have feelings for her best friend Serena’s ex, Dan. In Season 4, Ep 18, The Kids Stay in the Picture, Chuck comes to the realization that he wants to win Blair back after she and Dan share a kiss. In this blog post, please express whether or not you are a “Dair” or “Chair” fan! Do you want to see Blair with Chuck or Dan, or are you rooting for her fairytale romance with Prince Louis?

I think there's something in a relationship that lasts a long time like Chuck and Blair. The fact that it's off and on again means they obviously have some issues to work through and/or growing up to do (those often go hand in hand though). A new relationship for a bit might not be bad...but your best friend's ex? That's kind of a no-no, so I'm thinking if shse chooses Dan...that's just going to lead to even more drama, angst, and heartbreak. So you know, it'll probably happen!

If You Could Change Yourself...

In order for the creators of the show to develop a new animated world, some characters had to go through a makeover to fit the feel of the new environments. If you could makeover yourself in order to explore new situations, who would you make yourself into and where would you explore?

I'm not entirely sure who I would make myself into. That makes it sound as if I need to pick an actual person. As a huge Harry Potter fan, it would be cool to be someone that worked on the movies...live that life for a bit and see what it was like. However, if I had to just change the way I looked...I'm not sure. I think I'd like to explore the life of someone in a different country, so a person like me, just not from the United States. That would certainly be interesting.

A Top Ten Playlist for a Girl Who Really Needs Music in Her Life

I see a lot of writers talk about the playlists they used (or listened to) when they wrote a particular book. I’ve never done this since I need quiet to write, and my books are all set in fantasy worlds where music really doesn’t fit. But the idea of what music my protagonist might listen to or relate to if she suddenly found herself in my world was intriguing.

So here’s Nya’s Top Ten List:

10. We Are Family

A failed war for independence killed everyone in Nya’s family but her little sister, so this song would really resonate with her. Memories of her parents and Grannyma sustain her during her darker moments. Over the trilogy, she has to rebuild her family, and she does learn that family is more than just blood.

Her favorite line: Have faith in you and the things you do.

9. War

War has defined Nya’s life since she was ten years old, when enemy soldiers threw her and her little sister out on the street to fend for themselves. She’s known war and the trouble it brings to both sides.

Her favorite line: War can't give life, it can only take it away.

8. Healing Hands

Nya has the power to heal or hurt with her hands, but her pain shifting ability means to help one she must hurt another. Her ability is both a blessing and a curse, and she struggles with how to use it. Especially when it’s the only weapon she has when she needs to save her missing sister.

Her favorite line: There's a light, where the darkness ends, touch me now and let me see again.

7. You Gotta Be

When life is constantly trying to beat you down, you need a little inspiration to pick you back up. Des’ree is perfect to inspire Nya to get back up and fight the good fight even when she wants to hide away from it all.

Her favorite line: Challenge what the future holds.

6. Talkin’ About a Revolution

Since the day her people lost their war for independence, Nya has prayed for freedom (and truth be told, a little payback). It was never her plan to trigger a revolution, but she does and becomes the symbol that might just save her people.

Her favorite line: Finally the tables are starting to turn.

5. It’s My Life

When people discover what Nya can do, they come after her, wanting to use her for their own sinister purposes. Even those on her side want to use her as a weapon, but she just wants to be her. And for most of her life, she’s had no one to depend on but herself.

Her favorite line: Tomorrow's getting harder, make no mistake. Luck ain't even lucky, gotta make your own breaks.

4. Missing

Nya’s lost so many and so much, and those who took it all away from her don’t know or even care. She wishes it could all go back the way it was, but it never will. What’s gone is gone.

Her favorite line: You won’t cry for my absence, I know - You forgot me long ago.

3. Fallen

Nya does some questionable things to save her sister, but she does them with good intentions in her heart. She struggles over the ethics of her actions, wondering if she’s gone too far to save those she loves.

Her favorite line: The past can be undone.

2. I Will Survive

Despite the fact that her pain shifting ability makes Nya extremely hard to kill, she’s a fighter who never gives up. She’s a survivor through and through.

Her favorite line: You think I'd crumble, you think I'd lay down and die, Oh no, not I.

1. Courage

So many times Nya should have turned tail and ran, but she’s not the type of girl who backs down from trouble – or from what’s right. She steps up when needed, even if it’s the worst thing for her personally.

Her favorite line: Courage, it couldn't come at a worse time.

Your Life Story: Film or Animation?

The creators of Supernatural were able to construct an animated world in which there were no boundaries. This new look into Supernatural brings new perspective to the show. From adding color, intensity and action to scenes, to vivid images of horrifying demons, the medium does not disappoint. Has your perspective ever changed by looking at life moments in a new light? If you were to develop a story about your life would you want it to be told on film or animated in ink? Why?

I don't think my perspective on things change any more than most...people are often looking back on life and seeing life in a new light, so to speak. I do enjoy looking at old photos though. It almost makes you think you remember the moment...whether I do or not, I'm not always sure. Maybe it's just the pictures coming to life in my mind.

If I were to have my life developed though...it's hard to say which one I would want. Having it on film makes you care about the characters a little more, I think. They look real so you feel they are real more. I do like the advantage of using animation though. You aren't really limited to what you can recreate in real life. It can just be played out for you.

Summary: David's dad often has patients in their home, in order to help them with their mental issues. However, there has never been anyone quite like Zelda. She swears she is from another planet who has come to Earth to find her one true love. David instantly falls for her...captivated by her wild nature and even wilder stories (or so he believes). Soon Zelda is on the run and David finds himself dragged along to keep her safe and in his sight. Zelda is after one man...Johnny Depp.

Review: The premise of this story is really fun and the overall book is a quick read, filled with police and chases and creepy alien women. The idea that Zelda would go after Johnny Depp sounds simple enough for us human women, but Zelda didn't actually know her "one true love" was a famous movie star.

One of the things that makes this book interesting is the setting. It takes place in Paris, which makes sens as that is where Johnny lives. I like that there is a YA book out there for the U.S. market that isn't in the United States. You often get other countries when the book is historical but this is nothing but a contemporary...with elements of sci fi of course...unless Zelda is faking. Is she? Why is David so captivated by her then?

I wasn't completely in love with this book but it was fun and fast, and I can see a lot of boys and girls enjoying this.

The Big Bang Theory at Comic Con!

The above video includes the brains and actors behind The Big Bang Theory. They go around talk to some fans at Comic Con, letting them share their favorite characters. Of course, Sheldon is named almost right away. He's definitely my favorite. One of the guys, obviously, says Kaley Cuoco...who plays Penny, the pretty next door neighbor.

Afterwards, you get a peak at the panel. I really wish I could have been there. The moderator asks some questions and then they open it up to fans. This is stated to be one of their favorite parts, as I would imagine. You get some genuine people who love your show wanting to know more about it. They even have a girl asking about Sheldon's first kiss and how it might not have actually been the first, based on a past episode.

Obviously, a person's time at Comic Con is a wonderful experience. I'm extremely jealous of those that got to be there but you can see plenty of pictures and videos online!

Did You Grow Up With Harry Potter? (Project!)

Though the above photo isn't mine, it definitely sums up my feelings about J.K. Rowling, Harry Potter, and my life as a fan. It really was my childhood, and I'm so thankful for that.

I'm currently pursuing a project, but to fully propose the idea to a publishing company (I do have one in mind), I need a few things. One being...sample chapters. My idea is to collect essays from people around the world who grew up with Harry Potter. You read the books, saw the films, lived your life amongst the magic of Harry Potter. I know a lot of you out there have experienced this wonder throughout your life...and I want to hear about it.

Supernatural is an Anime Series!

After being separated for years, the Winchester brothers come together and surmount enormous obstacles (including some pretty gnarly demons) in search of their father. Throughout the show, family and brotherhood specifically is a very important theme. In fact, it is often the key element that saves each brother’s life when things get the most dangerous. How has family been there for you in moments of crisis? Do you have a brother or sister that you would stand alongside and fight demons?

I can't say I've really had a particular moment of crisis, but my family is pretty close...especially between me, my mom, and my sister. They are definitely two of my best friends. I love my brother as well and would definitely stand alongside him or my sister if they ever needed me. We love each other, and we love to be with each other...and that includes when things aren't always great. For the most part, in comes down to just talking to them or being there. Luckily, nothing tragic has affected our family too much.

As for this series, I'm really excited about it! I think having Supernatural as an Anime series was a great idea...and I personally want to buy this DVD now.

I know last week was full of Harry Potter hoopla, but we're not quite finished yet...there will be a couple more posts after this one and then I promise, we'll move on. Sigh. Harry Potter was my Childhood

An era has ended. I don't want to fill this post up with all my personal ramblings about Harry Potter. In basic terms, I love Harry Potter. I read the books around 7 or 8 and now that the movies are all out, I'm 21. I've waited at midnight, I've read the last book in a day, I've watched A Very Potter Musical, I've drank butterbeer, I've listened to Wizard Wrock, I've read (and written...I'll admit it) fan fiction, I've collected various HP merchandise, and I've loved it all. It's been a wild ride. I grew up with these characters.

I've laughed, I've cried, and I've quoted. I'll miss it. It'll always be part of my life and I'll always re-read the books and re-watch the films. Whenever I have kids, I'll read them these stories and share my own. I'm very thankful for J.K. Rowling for writing this series and for all the actors and crew and people that made the films come alive for us all.

I am so happy that I could grow up with this series. It'll never be the same after this. No more waiting for the next book and wondering what will happen next. Everyone else will have the seven books laid out to be read one after the other. I'm glad I got not only the story but the EXPERIENCE.

There's No Such Thing as Magic...Or Is There?!

Seriously...these jackets are like magic! It's almost like a pillow pet, but better (and I have a pillow pet!). Of course, these are only for small children so I can't go rockin' one but that's okay. They suit kids much better. ;-) You see, these jackets are Convertible Jackets. The photo above shows what they all look like as jackets on kids, but they can also be turned into a stuffed animal. So the ladybug jacket turns into a big ladybug and the frog turns into a frog...etc. etc. You got it! MAGIC!!

Since some of you found the other photos amusing, I thought I'd share some more HP fun. This above photo is something I've seen around for a few years now at least. It's not real, obviously, but have you ever wondered what a punk/goth Harry Potter cast would look like? Honestly, I think the purple in Hermione's hair is pretty and Ron is pulling off most of his look. Not too shabby! :)

Like I said before...I've read all the Twilight books and seen all the movies (so far). I'm not the BIGGEST fan, but I do enjoy it, so don't hate me for these. You have to admit, this is hilarious.

The Perfect Place to Hide a Horcrux!!

They shut with magnets, and as you can see from the photo above, it can hold a variety of items. Use it for your wizardry goods...or something more simple like money. Just slide the book with the rest and voila, nobody will know it's really hiding something fab!! It'll look like all your other novels. My second favorite HP book is the sixth, Harry Potter and Half-Blood Prince, so if I were going to get one of these...this would be it. You can also get Order of the Phoenix and Goblet of Fire.

Those are the only three Harry Potter safes, but they have plenty of other book options too from To Kill a Mockingbird to The Godfather. This would be the perfect gift for a book lover, especially if they are a book lover who seems to have EVERYTHING. I know I love books but some people don't want to get them for me because I have so many already and/or they don't know what all I have or have read. This would be a great idea instead!!

And don't hate me Twilight fans...I like it too. Harry Potter, in my personal opinion, is better and something I will always love. I've grown up with Harry Potter, and while I'm super excited to see the final film, I'm really sad this is the end. It'll be weird. I thought this picture was particularly hilarious though. I'll probaby post even more amusing HP pictures this week...just because it amuses me and I hope it gives some of you a few chuckles as well.

However, I'm also going to highlight some Harry Potter products that fans need in their lives. These are all things I've found via Etsy (great site!) and would spend my money on...if and when I ever had the money. I was going to start that today but time got away from me, so the first product highlight will go up tomorrow. I'd love to know your thoughts!

Oh, and for all you out there that have young kids or know young kids, you should bid on this jacket. You get a girl one or a boy one and it's practically magic which is why I'm mentioning it!! It's like a cooler pillow pet!! I'd totally want it if I were younger...but alas, it wouldn't fit!!!

Review: I'd never read a book like this one before, which is great. While a lot of what Cameron experiences and has to learn about isn't new, it's made unique by the fact that he's growing a whole year in just one day. He comes to understand just how unimportant looks can be, who his real friends are, and just how far a family can be pushed...but still survive.

One of my favorite characters was Wesley, Cameron's best friend. Wes isn't like the rest of the people Cam hangs with...he's a bit more nerdy, loves his camera and wants to be a filmmaker, and doesn't seem to care so much about the physical or outside of a person. Not that he doesn't get caught up in good looks! It happens to the best of us, but not nearly as bad as Cameron. Plus, he actually cares about Cam.

As for Cameron himself...it's not hard to completely hate him. Yes, he can be dumb and superficial...but you get to see a lot of sides of him. He loves his little sister, even if he doesn't always consider her feelings and she (named Kimber) really seems to adore him. It just takes a bit of learning for her to be able to really rely on her brother.

Cam's dad was another interesting character. I really disliked him for most of the story. I could understand him wanting his son to "be the best he can be" and everything, but he goes a bit far at times. Just think: he's a plastic surgeon and he wants his son to be perfect. Where does that lead Cam to go?

Now, I must mention Mrs. Gordon. She's the librarian. Normally, us book lovers would go "yay! a librarian character" but this lady is cra-zy. I'm not kidding. It's actually a bit extreme sometimes. While parts were realistic enough for me, some of the things she said or how she acted toward Cam were a bit out there...would she really not get in trouble for that? It had me a bit skeptical, but it didn't ruin the story.

Really...it was interesting overall. The mystery of it isn't too difficult to figure out, but I think people would enjoy it more for the relationship aspect (between Cam and various people - not just romantic either!) and the fact that it deals a lot with growth and becoming a good person.

This is the first in a trilogy. I'm definitely curious to check out the second one. I think it could be just as good.

I don't rate books for the most part...and I won't rate this one...but my final opinion is that it's worth checking out if you're interested. It didn't BLOW ME AWAY, but it was a pretty good start!

Review: I love the theater. I'm not an actor, nor a techie. I don't understand the ins and outs of that type of relationship. The last thing I've been in a play was a Munchkin in the 8th grade. However, I'm a huge fan of reading plays, watching them...and now, reading books that deal with the subject of theater like this one.

I could really understand Adam. After his father died, he was afraid of the dark. Now, he works on school plays with his best friend...he does the light, of course. He doesn't see the play in terms of the people on stage. He just sees the light, and how various types and different colors can change and affect your perception of the story. It's quite beautiful when he really gets into it. But more than that, Adam just seemed real. He knows the rule that techies and actors don't mix...but when he falls for an actress, he doesn't care. No, he's not going to stand on the stage and profess his love (and yes, he does try and hide it) but he isn't scared away from the idea.

While I enjoyed Adam, I wasn't a huge fan of Summer. This has much to do with a decision she makes in the book. I'm just not sure I can get over it. That's all I can say on that one.

Zadoff is a humourous writer though and you're sure to find plenty of funny moments. Oh, and I just realized...Allen Zadoff is the author and Adam Ziegler is the main character. Coincidence?!

Happy Saturday everyone! I have some fun news I wanted to share with everyone.

Supernatural and Road Trips

Fueled by the desire to explain their mother's death, the Winchester brothers set out on a cross-country mission investigating supernatural activity and fighting the demons that get in their way. Have you ever taken a trip of epic proportions? If so, where did you go? Did you have to fight any metaphorical demons to get there?

Well, no demons...metaphorical or otherwise. But in the past few years, the biggest trip I went on was one to New Jersey/New York City. We drove there, so it took quiteeeee awhile. Let me tell you. Going back was definitely worse though. First, we had barely taken off when we accidently locked our keys in the car. We had to wait awhile for someone to come and get the door open. Then, my face was awful! I'd gotten sun burnt AND wind burnt and it began to puff up and it was just a bit ridiculous. Definitely some interesting memories.

Review: I hate spiders. I can't even look at pictures of them. If you're like me, you will want to avoid a couple pages near the front of the book. Oh, and the back cover. That is the main issue that I have...I wish there wasn't a picture of a spider on the back cover. Yes, you can pretty much avoid it, but it just gives me the heebie jeebies, if you will.

As for the rest of the book, it's very interesting. It's full of questions starting with "how" that many kids (and even adults) might be curious about. Included with the answer, there are illustrations/pictures and even little "factoids" that relate to the question. One interesting question I found was "How does an arena change an ice rink into an basketball court?" They give you step by step guide, with photos, showing how it's done!

Some of these questions go back to the past and would give a fun little history lesson (great for homeschool kids!). One question I enjoyed was "How was mount rushmore built?" I had no idea!

One of my favorite parts of this book (and the main reason I find it worthwhile for many) is that there are "how" questions about crafts...and they give you steps of course!! For example, you learn "how to make your own camera", "how to make pizza", and even "how to make recycled paper."

I loved making crafts as a kids, and I think I would have gotten a kick out of these.

In the series pilot, Dean and Sam Winchester lose their mother to a demon. At the beginning of Season 2, the brothers face an equally tragic loss when their father, John, sacrifices himself to save his children. Throughout the season both brothers deal with this loss while coming to terms with what it means to be a family through humor. What does family mean to you? Feel free to share a funny story about something that brought your family closer together.

I don't really have a funny story of something that brought our family together. I know that I have a pretty great family though, and I'm super close to some of them. What does family mean to me though? More than anything, it means people that are there for you no matter what and with who you can be your complete self. My mom always says your home is meant to be your sancturary, and a big part of that is the people that inhabit it.

We might not have amusing stories of togetherness, but we do like to have fun and be together. I suppose one slightly funny story would be the time we woke up in the middle of the night...say around 3 or so...and we all went to Perkins. We ate a complete mail, hung out, and just talked. It was fun and goofy. We went home, watched a bit of TV, and went back to bed. The place is open 24 hours...why not have fun with that sometime? I recommend it!

Summary: Jake is a teen trying to live his life, but his OCD makes it difficult to appear normal. His only real friend is Luc, and he even knows that Jake has something going on with him. But Jake keeps it hidden. He tries to be the soccer champ everyone wants him to be and his sister helps him appear put together in front of his father...whose broken down by his wife, who deals with her own OCD.

Review: Jake has an obsession with numbers. This is something that starts almost every new section and chapter throughout the book. It definitely starts to grate on you as you read, but I think that's part of the point. You get a small peak into the madness of Jake's mind and what he must deal with. I'm pretty sure I have some form of OCD, so I could definitely relate to the repetition of things in your head and how you just want to MAKE.IT.STOP.

The overall story is how Jake is desperate to win his upcoming soccer championship. The numbers stop when he plays, and if he can win...he might be able to make the "magic" last and be "normal" for once. Everyone thinks that Jake is some sort of star, but he's just trying to hold on. It was interesting to see inside his family life and how his little sister has to protect him, and how he wishes desperately to help her, and how their father tries to block out the bad, and how their mother is dealing with her own mental issues and how it all affects the way they live. Wow. Long sentence. But that's just it. It's kind of a circle of life they live in, without fully opening up and showing they need help.

Not everything changes in the end. I suppose it can't. But it gets better in ways. It gets closer to a happy ending.

Down in New Jersey, twelve-year-old Brody is mostly concerned with the top ten hits on the radio and how much playing time he'll get on the football team. But when he goes along for the ride to Woodstock with his older brother and sees the mass of humanity there, he starts to wake up to the world around him-a world that could take away the brother he loves.

Review: While reading this book, it didn't always feel like an MG novel as it dealt with some big issues...mainly whether Brody's older brother (who he adores) will sign up for college in time to NOT be drafted and risk his luck in the Vietnam War. As Brody is only twelve, his point of view on the topic is limited to what he knows (not a ton) and what he hears (random information mainly from his dad's anger at his brother). In all though, this is a book for people much older than 12 as well.

I really enjoyed the time period. I wasn't alive then, and I'm sure a lot of people that read this weren't either...but that's what makes it interesting. Wallace did a great job making you feel like it really was 1969. He made you fear the war, love the music and experiences that go with it...the world definitely came alive in an unobtrusive way.

War and Watermelon has some deeper issues, but it's also just fun. You get inside the head of a 12 year old boy and it can't always be angst. It was a fairly short read, but not as a detriment to the story. It's definitely a perfect book to read this summer as it deals heavily with the lazy, crazy days of carefree-no-school fun.

Supernatural wants to know...

In Season 2 of Supernatural, the Winchester brothers face a wide assortment of otherworldly creatures including werewolves, shape shifters, ghosts, zombies, vampires and a clown demon. What is your favorite monster that the Winchester brothers have battled and why? If you were to come face to face with that monster, what would you do?

I would probably have to go with clown demon. Putting those two things together just make them extra creepy, right? And if I were ever unlucky enough to come across such a thing...I would probably run away crying. Yeah, I'm a wimp. I know. Good thing the Winchester brothers aren't or people may not love this show as much as they do! Plus...for all you pararnormal book lovers out there, how can you pass up a show all about it...with cute boys?!

sorry for the lack of posts lately. and now my computer has decided to go crazy and i won't get it back until later this week. i'm using my sister's right now, but because I don't have my own...that means there probably won't be that many posts this week. On the bright side, I'm doing a lot of reading and I hope to have lots of book reviews going up next week.

plus, i've decided to try and bring back music more to this blog. we started out as a music blog and i'm sure most of you didn't even know that...but then grew into an overall entertainment site with a lot of focus on books. but i love music, and i really want to get more into what's coming out these days so i hope you'll welcome the addition and comment. it's the best way to show interest.

Review:

Hades and Persephone is my all time favorite Greek myth, so I was ecstatic to learn about The Goddess Test. Though I wouldn’t necessarily call it a retelling, but more of a sequel.

The way that the mythology was worked was fantastic and learning about the tests was interesting. There was also the mystery of who was responsible for all of the other girl’s death. I will say that I didn’t figure out who the person was until a few pages before it was revealed. And there are plenty of twists to keep you reading.

I enjoyed Kate as a narrator. Her voice was easy to get into and reading about her life was fascinating. She handled all of her tests with her smarts, which made me like her even more. I also enjoyed many of the side characters. I was pleasantly surprised by how much I liked Ava, who at first glance seemed like the typical mean girl, but turned out to be a great friend. As for Henry, I liked him, but he annoyed me a bit with how mopey he could be. I did enjoy learning about him, and watching him slowly open up to Kate.

And Kate and Henry’s romance? I found it a bit lacking. There was something missing there that didn’t make it totally believable to me.

The ending left me with a lot of questions. I will definitely be counting down the days until I can get the sequel!

The sequel, Goddess Interrupted, will be released in January 2012.

Summary: The Graphic Classics books are essentially graphic novels but instead of being one original story...they take a theme or author and include a variety of stories. The Edgar Allan Poe novel, for example, uses Poe's classic short stories and poems and either includes the drawings with them or even shortens the stories so they fit in a graphic format. Included are The Imp of the Perverse, The Black Cat, The Cask of Amontillado, and more!

Review: One of my favorite stories was The Cask of Amontillado just because I found this book made the actual narrative make more sense. I just had a class this past semester dedicated solely to Edgar Allan Poe, so going over the stories/poems in there definitely helped when I looked over this book. However, as I said with Cask, I think using this a tool to learn about Poe or just enjoy his work is a great idea because the pictures and shortened narrative gives you a clearer view of what's happening.

As for the drawings, I think the poem Annabel Lee was done very well. It was very pretty, but not overly so, and the character's features reminded me of a fairly tale drawing. This definitely works well with the poem.

In all, I think it's great that different artists worked on this book because you're treated to various styles of art from more abstract to full-fledged bodies that make you think of a comic book such as in the William Wilson adaptation. Speaking of which, that is another story that made more sense to me in this book than just reading the actual story on its own...as it's originally quite long.

Apparently this is the time of Edgar Allan Poe with some Poe-esque books coming out (or so I hear), a film about The Raven, and even a T.V. show...so don't delay in getting started on your own collection!

Extra, Extra, This Just In

So I've been sick this past week which is why there have been very few posts here or on Let's Get Beyond Tolerance. I do have a few things lined up for both sites though and will try and post a bit more regularly next week.

I have been trying to keep up on the TLC Auctions though and you can find two new ones posted today, not to mention the other two still going on. But be quick...they start ending tonight! Some bigger items will start appearing now...so be sure to follow, even if you aren't sure you want to bid!

Next...are you a student of some sort? You might apply for the Living Beyond Tolerance scholarship I've set up. It's very informal. I just want the winner to use it for education of some sort. You have to write an essay to enter but the winner gets $200 automatically. There will be November auctions in hopes of raising more than that though so the winner is supported for the good they do. Do you classify as LGBT or an Ally? Do you know someone who is? Tell them to check this out!

Living Beyond Tolerance Scholarship

I'm setting up a scholarship. It's a bit informal. We won't know the full amount (but the smallest it will be is $200) until the end of November of 2011. However, you can start applying next month (June, everyone!) and I'd really love to see people from all over getting involved. If you can't apply...spread the word. Regardless, there is something most of you can do (big or small) and I'd love to have more help.

To find out more about the scholarship, please go here and read up! It's called the "Living Beyond Tolerance" scholarship and is for those that identify as LGBT or an Ally.

Most of the money will come from a set of auctions this November. There is still plenty of time until then, but that means you should start saving your money to bid now...and if you want to donate something, plan big! If you know early, maybe you can offer something fab! Not that ALL donations aren't fab. They are, and I appreciate everyone's help with things like this!

As for now...I DO have other auctions going on for two people that could really use the help, so please follow them as well. Bigger things coming up!

Review: Maybe it's weird, but I've always been fascinated by these type of things. Normally it gears more toward school shootings but especially after reading John Belushi is Dead, I've become a bit more fascinated by people like Charles Manson. In family, Henry is a charismatic man that tells these people exactly what they want and need to hear. He talks of a life where everything is shared, where there is no past, where there is only the now and the only family they need is his...forget about the rest, it doesn't matter. It sure sounds good, especially to Melinda, whose "Uncle" abused her and mom let it happen, never saying a word, never saving her.

It might sound crazy or messed up, but reading this book, you do get to see inside Melinda's head. You see the reasons she goes, the reasons she stays, the reasons she does certain things. Like she said, she is broken. I think she can be fixed though and I think she makes steps towards that...even choosing to fix herself instead of letting other people rip her apart even more.

I loved the verse in this book as it felt more realistic to what Melinda would actually be thinking. Sometimes it's short thoughts, sometimes longer. The episodes even jump a bit so you see a little of what is to come and then go back to what is happening in the now. It's one thing that keeps you reading as you can see exactly what's to come...but how does it end?

Really, the one complaint I had is that Melinda repeats certain words or phrases a lot. It makes sense, just like the verse did...it makes it seem more real and lets readers focus on certain things. However, it can get a bit repetitive and annoying after awhile as you continue reading as it's a pretty constant thing.

Regardless, family is an excellent book. It deals with a dark side of the world but still pulls you in, makes you think.
