5 Ways To Make Exercise More Fun!

*This post is sponsored by Fabletics; but all opinions are my own*

Do you like to exercise? I'm going to go out on a limb and say most of you probably don't really like it. I'd be one of those people. However, I think there are ways that can help you get up and get moving more, and I thought I'd share some of those today! Feel free to leave any other ways to make exercise more fun in the comments below, and any social media shares would be great!

1. Fashionable and Functional Exercise Clothes

This is one tip that I need to utilize myself, and I do plan on gathering some fun athletic wear here and there. I think it's obvious that when you feel good about how you look, you feel more confident in general. This should relate to working out too. Get some items that make you feel good - that fit and are cute too! There are places that sell some great athletic wear like Fabletics, as it's full of variety and sizes! Not every person is petite, but everyone needs to get up and moving, so it's important that there are fashionable and functional exercise clothes for all!

2. Enlist a Buddy

Everything is more fun with a friend, right? When I did go to a gym, I usually only went when a friend of mine could go. We helped motivate each other to actually leave the house and go, especially for her since she was often my ride there. I don't go to the gym anymore because of costs, but I still agree that enlisting a buddy is a good way to make exercise more fun. If you don't go to the gym, take a class together or just get out and take a walk. I went to the park one day with a friend and since she had her mom's dog, we took a walk through the park's trails. It was a bit tiring, but being out there with her made it much more pleasant. Now I want to go to the park and take walks!

3. Audiobooks/Music/Podcasts

I've tried audiobooks a couple times but they never really held my attention. However, I do want to give them a chance in the future. I think if I'm taking a walk by myself, I would focus a lot better. After all, I can listen to podcasts and those hold my interest. The one podcast I'm currently listening to is My Favorite Murder. It might sound a bit gruesome, but it's not all that bad. Yes, the two hosts do talk about various murders each episode but it's also infused with a lot of humor and lightheartedness so nothing gets too dark. As for just music in general, I listened to artists sometimes when I was at the gym and it can help pass the time. All of these are just ways to allow your mind to focus on something other than having to work out. Granted, they work best if you are on the treadmill or walking outside because you don't have to think too much.

4. Reward Yourself

If you're anything like me, rewarding yourself usually brings something edible to mind. That's not the type of reward I mean. You don't want to waste a good workout by then going and eating ice cream or a candy bar. Even though it often sounds really good. Instead, find some other ways that you can reward yourself. Maybe it's something you buy - say you exercise so much in a week and you get to buy some new songs for your iPod, or you exercise so many days in a month and you get to buy a new book. If you don't want the rewards to be monetary, maybe use something you already have to reward yourself - like a nice bubble bath, binge watching a favorite or even new-to-you show, having a friend come over to hang out, or even taking a long nap when you usually do something else!

5. Try Something New!

I find that one thing that makes exercise a chore is that it can often be boring. You're doing the same thing all the time and if you don't notice results right away, you can start to shut down a bit. A good way to keep exercising fun is to try new things here and there. If you like walking or running, go to the park and use a trail. If you normally do this, find a new trail! If you can afford it, try an exercise class or even some other type of class/group that gets you up and moving. A few years ago I joined a dance class for the first time. I'd never taken them as a child but I always liked the idea of dance, so I signed up. That first class was tap and jazz and it didn't take long for me to fall in love, especially with tap! There's just something about hearing the sound of those tap shoes! If you already belong to a gym, look into group classes there. Or maybe you just need to find a gym - be around other people and find new equipment to work out with. It's cheaper to use gym equipment than to buy your own!

  2. I go through phases where I'm really good about exercising for a while and then horrible about it for a while. Right now I'm on a horrible streak. Sigh. I have an elliptical in the basement and I watch shows while I work out---if I pick a show I really love, it's a great motivator. Guess I need to find a show I really want to watch again ...

  3. I agree with all of these tips, especially 2 and 3. Exercising is so much easier when you go with a friend and/or have something to listen to so that you're not thinking about how much time you still need to exercise.

  4. I actually really enjoy exercise, but these are fantastic tips! Especially rewarding yourself - I still do it every few weeks. The right audiobook (aka, narrator) has lead to some of my longest workout sessions!

  6. Music and cute wear always make exercise more fun for me! Also, I used to go running in the evenings with my friend or my mother. It's more fun that way, plus gives a bit of motivation as you don't stop whenever you would like to :)

  11. I've always wanted to try Fabletics but haven't gotten around to it yet. Their clothes always look cute and fashionable and they actually make me want to work out :) Also having a partner and great tunes are totally beneficial! Thanks for the reminder that I need to get my butt to the gym today. Have been putting it off, but it's necessary :)

  15. I MUST have music to workout. I don't necessarily care about fashionable workout clothes...as long as it fits, it works for me.

  16. I've been working out for years and I still hate it lol There's nothing that make sit easier for me except to be done with it (except for walking which I love).

But I do it everyday so there's that.

What works for me is breaking down the workouts. I do a minute 10 arms workout - then 10 minutes cardio for example. It all adds up but doesn't seem as daunting to me as committing to a 30-60 workout. Even though that's what I end up doing. And some days I stop at the 10 and that's ok. At least I moved.

  21. Yes! Great tips! New workout clothes always put me in a better mood, and that's actually how I reward myself now instead of food. I love doing group exercise classes because they always change things and it's never boring.

  26. Great and useful tips. I do exercise and I always infuse music along the way as I jog. It's my way to focus what I am doing, at the same time, refresh myself from stress.

  28. I think it would be a good idea for me to just keep on with playing music since it keeps me going. I'm worried I'll get too sucked in with an audiobook or podcast but I guess that's the point. I do need to do something with my exercise clothes.... They are run down.

  29. I also like to have pretty workout clothes and listening to fun music, but lately it's so difficult to have the time and energy to just do it!

  30. Now this is something different! I like the audio part and ethnic wear. Listening to music, audio series are my favorite one.

  34. I'm horrendous at exercising because I get so bored and I'm lazy, self consciousness also doesn't help so these tips are very useful! I'll have to try them

  35. A good podcast can get me through most of a long run. Bonus if I can listen to several! I just listened to an awesome one this morning about a midwife. It was fascinating and hilarious.

  36. I kind of hate the thought of exercising but if I finally do i I feel better. Still motivation is hard. I like to watch tv shows while on the elliptical to pass the time. Walking with my kids is good too. These are great tips!!

  37. I definitely enjoy trying new workouts to make exercise more fun! I haven't tried running with an audiobook but I hear good things!

  38. Music is an absolute must for me! I need it to do everything in my house - cleaning, cooking, tuning out my husband and child when they're talking about sports...wait...what? LoL!!
I think rewarding yourself with something is also a really fantastic idea and working with a buddy. My husband and his best friend were working out together for a long time until the summer hit and then the beer and baseball started happening. LOL. I guess it's all in who you buddy up with!

  39. those are all great tips to stay motivated and enjoy exercising! I try to practice them all on your list, I should try something new and switch my routine up a little more : )

  40. YIKES! I'm definitely no fan of exercise, but I definitely love the buddy idea which has worked for me in the past. I also like to use On Demand or Roku which gives many opportunities to find new exercises to try with different instructors, and I can switch around from one to another when I get bored with just one. The best part - no one can see me sweating and struggling to get up just one more leg lift. (lol) Great topic!

  41. These are SUCH great tips! Thank you for sharing. I definitely fall into the camp of not wanting to exercise much. I've been better about taking walks lately though! I have to agree with the last one for sure, I tried belly dancing in college (with a friend!) and it was a blast. I ended up buying a DVD for home and it's SO MUCH FUN. I thought I would hate it and be terrible, but it's fun to do just on your own at home. You don't have to be good, just have fun! hehe Great post, and great motivation. Thanks for sharing, and good luck on your continued journey! XO - Alexandra
