Unhinged by A. G. Howard

Review: Normally I would post the official summary, but
as not everyone has read Splintered (the first book in this trilogy), I
don’t want anything to be ruined and the summary does give away some
things. In general, this is the continuing story of Alyssa and her
adventures with the real Wonderland, a place way creepier than the story
Lewis Carroll wrote about. In Splintered, Alyssa was taken on a journey
with Jeb and Morpheus by her side. In Unhinged, this is the same,
except Wonderland has come to Alyssa’s world instead of vice versa.
I remember reading a review a long time ago where
the reviewer wished Alyssa had actually gone to Wonderland. This aspect didn’t really bother me as we still learn more about Wonderland’s
inhabitants, with some even entering this world. As for Alyssa’s
companions, Morpheus is still just as infuriating in this book as he is
in the first. It’s fascinating to learn more about him and his
motivations though. As for Jeb, he’s obviously a good guy but he seems to think
Alyssa can’t do things on her own. Honestly, I wish the books were more
“girl power” than love triangle, but it does fairly well in that
regard.
Unhinged was an enjoyable read and I am very curious to see how things end in Ensnared. I hope to be able to read it soon!
I was curious about this series, I heard nice things about it. I hope the sequel is good!
ReplyDeleteOoh, this sounds amazing - I love that it's a slightly more twisted version of Wonderland. Totally need to check it out!

Oh my goodness what an amazing cover.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad that you still enjoyed this book overall despite some issues, when I first heard about this book I thought that it wouldn't be my sort of read, but the more reviews I've read, the more I want to pick this book up! Lovely review! :)
ReplyDeleteOh gosh. I remember Morpheus! He's infuriating and manipulative. Ugh. I'm glad you're still motivated to read on, though.
ReplyDeleteI've been wanting to read this series for some time! I love the gorgeous book covers and enjoy a good retelling. I agree, it would be fun to have a girl power sort of book versus a love triangle with this series. I'm glad you've enjoyed this series, and am looking forward to your concluding thoughts with Ensnared :)

Ohhh, I loved Morpheus, so much more than Jeb. Jeb felt too wooden and really tended to hold Alyssa back, like the girl couldn't do anything for herself. I enjoyed this even more than the first and didn't mind that it was set mostly in our world, rather than Wonderland. I can't wait to see what you think of Ensnared Lauren, it's super wacky but also the one I had the most issues with. Fabulous review! <3
ReplyDeleteYeah, I mean, I loved Splintered being in Wonderland, but it was great seeing Wonderland bleed into our world, made things all that more twisted and creepy, so totally loved that. I mean, Wonderland had already been done and know there's so much you could do with it, but it's nice to have change of setting, and the third has a different one too (I think).
ReplyDeleteI absolutely LOVED this one. XD But I think I'm biased and passionate about the entire series now, because Alice in Wonderland has such a special place in my soul. It's so insane and weird and wonderful. Omg. *hugs Morpheus* I agree Alyssa could use a little more girl-power though.
ReplyDeleteThanks for stopping by @ Paper Fury!
This sounds so interesting, and I really like the cover :)
ReplyDeleteI'm glad you liked this one, I enjoyed it as well! I was one that kinda wished the trio had visited Wonderland because I loved the magic the author spun into it, although the book stands pretty strong without it. Great review!
ReplyDeleteI LOVED Splintered and I actually own this book but haven't read it yet. I admit that I am not a fan of love triangles, like AT ALL, but Wonderland coming to Alyssa? Sounds awesome!
